Chapter Four

Sam collared Rose on the stairs that evening.

“Rose, I just want to apologise,” he said.

“What for?” she asked, adjusting her glasses. She had spent the afternoon sorting the library to distract herself from the soreness of her back.

“For acting like an ass,” he said. “Master is not one to throw his heart away recklessly, and I suspect he sees more in you than is on your surface. I’m pleased for you.”

“I didn’t want you to find out like that,” she sighed. Especially after what you told me.”

“I know, but if you had just told me, I don’t think I would have believed it,” Sam smiled. Rose nodded – Nick had been right. Sam had needed to see the kiss. He would be alright.

“Will you be ok?”

“I’m always ok,” Sam said. “And don’t think you’re getting rid of me any time soon. Master says he has no intention of getting rid of me, as long as I want to stay here. But, if I’m looking for love, I’ll have to search elsewhere.”

“I’m glad you’ll stay,” Rose smiled and headed down the stairs, towards the library. It was very peaceful in the house now, almost as though a great weight had been lifted from the shoulders of the household. She wondered how long both she and Nick had been holding in their feelings. And what might have happened if they had kept things to themselves.
